Galway Bay fm newsroom – A new high-powered electricity network will be in operation in Connemara before the end of the year.
Work on the new 110 kilovolt power line almost complete and ESB Networks has confirmed that it will be brought into commission between October and the end of December.
The power supply in Connemara was famously described some years ago by reliable sources as ‘surviving on a wing and a prayer.’
The 38kv system was long outdated and very unreliable as the demands for electricity increased greatly over the years.
The ESB decided to install a 110 Kv power network into Connemara at a cost of approximately €25m – giving a threefold boost to the system.
However, there were planning difficulties and objections resulting in long delays before the work could get underway.
ESB Networks says the final work on the overhead cable network from Galway will be completed soon and that the new booster station at Screebe is nearing completion.
The system, they say, will be energised in the 4th quarter of this year.
