New power arrangement for City Council
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A new power pact in Galway City Council is set to emerge.
It’s understood negotations between various parties and individuals over the weekend have resulted in the previous pact falling.
That was a pact between Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Independents, 3 of whom were previously Progressive Democrats.
However, Galway Bay fm news has learnt that a new pact to have majority voting power in the city council has been formed.
It is between the 4 Fine Gael, 2 Labour and 4 independents, 3 of whom are former PDs who were part of the previous pact.
This will give the group the majority of 10 votes in the 18 councillor Council.
It looks likely that Independent, Donal Lyons will become the first Mayor of the new Council.
The first meetings of the City and County Councils will take place this coming Friday.
The County meeting will get underway at Prospect Hill at 2pm, while the City Council meeting will follow at City Hall at 6p.m.
However, Sinn Féin’s Anna Marley believes a fairer way of selecting a new city mayor should be undertaken in the form of the D’Hondt method.
It’s a mathematical way of dividing positions based on the votes for each party or individual.
