Cross Street: set to be pedestrianised next week.

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – With an accelerated reopening of the economy underway, it was revealed this week that far-reaching measures to increase footfall in the city centre will begin to take effect next week – with pedestrianised streets and a reduced 30km/h city speed limit forming just part of a new mobility strategy.

Speaking to the Galway City Tribune, City Council Chief Executive Brendan McGrath confirmed that plans were well advanced to reconfigure city streets and create shared spaces to make the city more accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

Time was of the essence, said Mr McGrath, adding that the City Mobility Team set up to manage this task four weeks ago had processed almost 1,000 submissions from the public.

Plans from next Monday include the widening of footpaths on Eglinton Street and Forster Street, and the pedestrianisation of Cross Street. A design is also being drawn up for a cycle-way from Blackrock to Wolfe Tone Bridge.
