New pastoral plan allows for falling number of priests in Tuam archdiocese
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Archdiocese of Tuam is addressing the decreasing number of priests in parishes by launching a new Pastoral Plan.
This coming weekend the plan will be distributed at masses across Galway within the Archdiocese.
‘Journeying Together in Faith’ looks at various proposals, such as introducing a permanent diaconate (dee-ak-on-et).
It’s estimated that by 2020, the 55 parishes in the Archdiocese will be served by about 50 priests, 20 less than there are currently.
The grouping of parishes is also included in the plan such as one priest serving Williamstown and Glenamaddy.
Tuam Parish would go from three priests to two, while two priests living in Tuam would serve the Tuam parish and Killererin.
One priest would also serve the parishes of Mountbellew-Moylough and Menlough-Skehanagh.
Fr Tod Nolan who was part of the working group on the plan says it’s about ensuring most services still take place in parishes.
