The proposed Galway City Outer Bypass stretch of roadway will ‘gobble up’ almost 500 acres of farmland from 171 farmers, the Oral Hearing on the project has been told.

In a submission to the Oral Hearing, Agricultural Consultant, Con Curtin, who acts for the affected landowners, said that five farmers would not be able to continue in agriculture because of the development.

Another 39 farmers will not be able to continue in farming without considerable management or operational changes — most of the problems are caused by ‘severance’ of the existing holdings by the new roadway.

The 21km (13 miles) of proposed roadway — including the new fifth bridge across the Corrib — will impact mostly on mixed dry stock farms which make up over 90% of the holdings affected.
