New Miss Galway sets sight on Miss Ireland double for the county
A former Irish international volleyball star will be hoping to pull off a Galway double of a different kind later this summer – as she bids to keep the Miss Ireland crown in the county for a second year in a row.
Ava Mathews will represent Galway this year at the 75th Miss Ireland, which takes place on August 20 at the Royal Theatre Castlebar, after the 37 finalists vying for the coveted title were revealed at a sparkling white party this week.
Ava, who is from Loughrea, is currently studying for her Bachelor of Science degree in NUI Galway and is majoring in Physiology.
The 21-year-old is a model with Catwalk Modelling agency, a medical research intern and played volleyball for Ireland for many years.
Ava has chosen to work with the Galway Hospice to raise much needed funds. She has a huge interest in cancer research and is currently interning at CCMI who manufacture Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products for use in clinical trials for life-limiting conditions – including cancer.
She will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of reigning Miss Galway and Miss Ireland, Pamela Uba, who captured the hearts of the nation with her incredible story and featured prominently in the Irish media and internationally on TV Shows in LA, London, Johannesburg and featured in the New York Times.
