NEW GALWAY MOTORWAY TO OPEN EARLY TO TACKLE FLOODING CRISIS
Date Published: 20-Nov-2009
The unfinished M6 motorway between Ballinasloe and the city will be opened temporarily to allow access to Galway from the East.
Connacht has in effect been cut off from the rest of the country with the flooding of a vital road artery in Ballinasloe.
The National Roads Authority has agreed to open one lane of the motorway as a result of a request from Galway West Deputy Frank Fahey.
The lane will be opened this afternoon with a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour and will be heavily policed by the Garda Traffic Corps.
The Garda Commissioner has agreed to deploy extra Gardai from the East to monitor the M6 as a safety precaution.
