The property market in towns and villages around Galway is booming again, with sales volumes last seen at the peak in 2007, according to official State statistics from the State’s Price Register.

The majority of areas across the county recorded significant increases in activity in the first half of this year – albeit at prices that have been slashed in half.

And first-time buyers are once again driving the market across the county, with sales increases also recorded in most county towns and villages.

Excluding Galway city, there were 645 residential sales in the first six months of this year – up 50% from 431 in the same period last year.

The property market in Ballinasloe was the most active in the county in the first half of this year (compared to the same period last year), according to the figures.

Figures show that a total of 56 properties were sold in Ballinasloe in the first six months of this year – up 70% on the same period last year.

In Craughwell, sales were up 400%; in Clifden the rise was 238%; figures are up 150% in Williamstown; 125% in Oranmore; Headford and Kilcolgan have doubled; Portumna up 67%; Loughrea up 62%; Athenry up 44%; Corrandulla up 33%, while sales in Claregalway and Moycullen are up by one-fifth.

The lowest increase in sales activity was recorded in Tuam, which was up 18%.
