Galway Bay fm newsroom – An electronic medical record project planned for the Galway University Hospitals is expected to cost more than 7 million euro.
The Electronic Document and Records Management system is being considered as an alternative to paper documentation.
A spokesperson for the hospitals says managing paper records is very resource intensive and difficult to manage due to the movement of patients between departments.
For Galway, it’s expected that five million euro will be spent on scanning documents over the next six years- with total costs expected to exceed 7 million euro.
David Lynch of the Medical Independent says that the potential cost would be offset by the savings made on managing paper records.
