New doc captures vibrancy of Galway’s music scene

A new documentary captures the vibrancy and multi-culturalism of Galway’s thriving arts community – not to mention the unprecedented wealth of talent currently dominating the city’s music scene. Mol an Óige agus Tiocfaidh Sí is the debut project of filmmaker Órlaith Mac Eoin Manus – and it is as much a celebration of the energy and atmosphere generated by local artists as it is an ode to the featured acts.

That being said, Órlaith’s documentary – made with her own G-Town Films – draws attention to that wealth of musical talent around the city, featuring live performances and interviews from NewDad, Turnstiles and Rodney.

Crucially, the film is as welcoming and encouraging as the people it documents. Revolving around themes of expression and togetherness, it is a raw and awkward ode to youth.

The Galway it portrays is one that welcomes people of all interests and backgrounds – and for Órlaith, it was a welcome change.

“I had come from quite a rural area in Armagh where I had been fitting in and not really breaking any norms,” she recalls.

“Coming into Galway and seeing so much expression – it was the opposite vibe and I had never really seen it before. It was unbelievable that this was mostly being done by young people.

“That was the inspiration. I was really taken by it and I loved being part of it and an audience within that. I hope the documentary lets people look back on that and be able to see people breaking the mould. Young people in Galway really express themselves in the way that they want to and it pays off because they’re putting on gigs and pop-up shops and really excelling.
