New Dad...Black Gate gig.

Belying their relative inexperience, Galway band New Dad are fast becoming one of the city’s most inventive and enthralling acts. The group’s new release – a dreamy, shoegaze ballad – is as accomplished a debut single as they come. How gives an indication of the band’s ability in terms of songwriting and production and they will be looking at it as a springboard for an exciting year.

New Dad play The Black Gate Theatre next Wednesday, March 11, as part of the Eclectics spring line-up.

The four-piece have been building up a reputation around Galway as a consistently impressive live act but, with recorded material now to their name, they are taking a major step – and bass player Áindle O’Beirn discusses the process of getting to this point.

“It’s called How because that’s one of the lines in the song and that’s usually the easiest way to pick a title,” he notes.

“We recorded it at a small home studio that we have running in our guitarist Julie’s house. I did a one-year recording artist course in GTI so I know a bit about it and one of the other members is doing a sound engineering course in Limerick for three years.

“We recorded it ourselves – we kind of liked being able to really get into the thick of it and record everything… If we had any ideas, we could just instantly put them down and express ourselves properly. We had it mixed by Chris Ryan, a fella out in the north, who has done stuff for Just Mustard and he’s really excellent.”

Áindle is joined by Julie Dawson on guitar and vocals, Sean O’Dowd on guitar and Fiachra Parslow on drums. The four members seem comfortable in their individual roles but with How, they recognised the need for another set of ears in the mixing process.
