New Dad – a special band on the up

New Dad

There is an air of something special from New Dad lead singer, Julie Dawson, and the band’s guitarist, Sean O’Dowd.

Julie is happy to be back in Galway where she has been able to see her dog and her family in that order. The 2020 European Capital of Culture is where the band first came together. Julie didn’t want to do her Leaving Cert music practical alone and suggested forming a group.

Sean started recording with the band while studying music tech in Limerick and stood in for one gig. “And here I am,” he remarks. “I got roped in.”

Also a Galwegian, Sean says that the city “is such a creative place.” He believes Irish crowds are the best in the world because they “want you to know that they’re there, whereas an English crowd just wants to be a listener.”

The name New Dad came from an online band name generator. Julie indicates that some people take issue with the name, but she is not bothered by those critics because “most band names suck until you’re successful.”

Sean disagrees that the name sucks, saying he has never heard someone challenge it. “I think it does kind of suit the music,” he notes, adding that it “is inspired by Dad rock, what our parents would listen to”.
