Teresa Roche: More women want to get involved in farming.

MEASURES in the new CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) to increase and improve women’s participation in farming have been welcomed by Galway IFA Farm Family and Social Affairs representative, Teresa Roche.

She said that the measures being introduced in the new CAP would both acknowledge and encourage greater participation by women in farming.

“I suppose traditionally back the years, women tended to have more of a background role in farming but that is changing and there are many women who are very interested in a career in agriculture.

“This has to be a good thing for farming, and women can bring their own perspectives, ideas and innovations into the development and growth of the family farm,” Teresa Roche told the Farming Tribune.

However, she added that men deserved ‘fair play too’ in terms of the cut-off age for grant aid whis is 65 for women and 40 for men. “Men should have the same age ceiling, as many men don’t take over farms until they are over 40,” said Teresa Roche.
