New book from Galway mum beating the odds on incurable cancer

A mum of four who has beaten all odds to survive since 2014 with incurable terminal cancer has penned a second book aimed at giving hope to others.

Olive Shaughnessy has just been released from hospital after spending a week being treated for cellulitis, a side effect of her chemotherapy which she receives every three weeks.

Since being diagnosed, Olive has received a phenomenal 80 rounds of chemotherapy. But she remains the eternal optimist – even after spending hours and waiting for a bed in the emergency department – grateful that the harsh chemical regime has kept her alive despite having Stage 4 metastatic cancer.

“I got fantastic care in there, but really people on chemo shouldn’t be going through the A&E. We’re so prone to infections and the place was just packed with people coughing and spluttering,” she exclaims.

Ahead of next week’s launch of her latest tome, ‘Miracles and Milestones On My Cancer Journey’, Olive is quick to dispel any notion of doom and gloom.

“I live my beautiful life in gratitude and by my ‘3 Ps – Positivity, Prayer and People.  I have been truly blessed with a wonderful supportive family, and the most terrific friends and neighbours,” she said.

Olive’s debut, ‘My Olive Branch – My Second Chance’ sold an impressive 4,000 copies.

Her new book will be launched next Thursday, March 14, in the Loughrea Hotel and Spa at 8pm, and will be on sale there as well as in shops in Loughrea, at the Galway Clinic and at Duggan’s Pharmacy opposite the Bons Secours in Renmore.
