New beach toilet doors can’t withstand salt water
The cubicle doors of the newly-built toilet blocks on Salthill Promenade and at Blackrock are being replaced – because they were not built to withstand salt air and water!
Despite the new blocks only being completed in March, the doors have had to be changed, although the City Council will not have to bear the cost.
A Council spokesperson confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that the doors which were installed by the contractor were not to ‘marine specification’.
“The doors put up were not to the specification set out by Galway City Council, they were to be marine specification. The doors have been replaced at the expense of the contractors,” the spokesperson said.
The previous toilet blocks at Ladies Beach and Blackrock were destroyed in arson attacks in November 2014, costing an estimated €200,000 worth of damage.
When the Council advertised for tenders in April 2015 for their refurbishment, they were due to be completed by July 1 – however, they were not completed until March.
According to the Council, the modern new blocks – which include hot shower facilities – were installed at a cost of around €80,000.
