New album and concert from James Vincent McMorrow

With an impeccable new album to his name, James Vincent McMorrow makes a welcome return to Galway next Wednesday, October 5.

The Dublin native released We Move at the beginning of September and was greeted with some of the most glowing reviews of his career. It opens with Rising Water, and then moves into I Lie Awake Every Night, which recalls McMorrow’s battles with the eating disorder he had as a teenager.

This is no longer just singer/songwriter territory – McMorrow has morphed into an R&B artist, a singer well versed in soul. But even if you ignore pigeon-holing and genres, We Move is a record worth seeking out.

His third studio album, it was recorded between Los Angeles, Toronto and Dublin, and saw him work alongside producer Two Inch Punch whose previous collaborators include Damon Albarn and James Bond singer Sam Smith. The record also features Frank Dukes, a musician who has been sampled by Drake and Kanye West.

It’s fair to say this is McMorrow’s most ambitious record to date. How he will replicate it live remains to be seen, but it’s an intriguing prospect. McMorrow also brings a hugely accomplished bunch of players with him when he hits the road. So this, as they say, is a no-brainer.
