New album and tour shows Mickey Joe is still all Harte
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Mickey Joe Harte went viral before going viral was even a thing. It’s been sixteen years since the Donegal singer-songwriter shot to fame as the inaugural winner of popular Irish TV singing contest You’re a Star – but the experience continues to offer him a platform for success.
This Saturday, Mickey returns to Galway to play Monroe’s Live as part of his Irish spring tour. Having spent time recording and performing in Germany, Mickey is set to release Me Two – a collection of creative versions of popular songs that he has forged connections with over the course of his career.
The first single from the album is a cabaret-style cover of Twenty One Pilots’ Stressed Out but the song selection is diverse throughout.
“The last bunch of recordings I’ve done have all been in Germany,” Mickey recalls.
“We’ve done a lot of original stuff and writing with a producer over there so we have a lot of stuff in the bag. We had intended to put out an original album this year and hopefully we still will – it’s very much a work-in-progress… the Me Two thing is my take on some covers – it’s my own version of things.
“It started out with myself and the producer just messing about because we have a similar taste in music. My manager sort of said that we should maybe do a covers album in between the original stuff because these are really nice versions.”
Having gone several years without releasing a full-length album, Mickey hopes that Me Two will act as the perfect way to reintroduce himself to a lot of people in the industry. The idea may have come about by chance but it’s a project he is fully engaged with.
“We sort of hope that maybe this will be a nice way to reconnect with people and with DJs and broadcasting stations,” Mickey admits.
