From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Faster for some, but far slower for others – that’s the road ahead for city motorists this Autumn as speed limit changes click into gear.

Proposed changes to urban speed limits were spelled out to city councillors this week, with inner-city driving set to be far slower from October.

A 30km/h (18.6mph) is to be introduced for the inner-city areas – bounded by Lough Atalia Road, Fr Griffin Road, St Mary’s Road, Quincentenary Bridge and the Sean Mulvoy Road – though those roads themselves will not be included in the new limit.

There will be some relief for motorists who over the years have paid the prices in terms of fines and penalty points on Bóthar na dTreabh.

The 50km/h limit on that stretch of road – linking the Headford Road and Tuam Road – will be given an 80km/h speed limit.

Average speeds on that stretch of dual carriageway came in at 86.4km/h, according to a survey carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Another proposed increase is the stretch between Kenny’s Garage and Roadstone on the Tuam Road – from 50km/h to 100km/h.

The proposed speed limits are expected to come into force from October onwards, following a statutory public consultation process.
