National Emergency Committee in session to discuss storm damage

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Office of Public Works Minister says its too early to estimate the cost of the damage caused by the recent storms, with Galway one of the worst affected areas

Brian Hayes says local authorities have been asked to provide the Government with an initial assessment by next week.

The National Emergency Co-ordination Committee is meeting in Dublin today – to review the impact of the bad weather.

Local authorities and home and business owners are today counting the costs of the recent stormy conditions – which battered the country over the last two weeks.

Counties along the South and West coasts were the areas worst affected by the high winds, heavy rain and tidal surges – which resulted in coastal flooding.

Parts of Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway and Mayo bore the brunt of the adverse weather – with severe structural damage in some coastal areas.

Met Eireann – which has lifted its weather warning alerts – says the storm force conditions are easing and will continue to abate as the week progresses.

This afternoon – members of the National Emergency Co-ordination Committee are meeting in Dublin to assess the damage and examine the response and repair work.

Its anticipated the cost could run into hundreds of millions of euro.

However the Office of Public Works Minister – Brian Hayes – says its too early to give an estimate.

He says local authorities have begun the processes of assessing the damage.
