My Fellow Sponges for Townhouse show
Local curiosities My Fellow Sponges, who have built up a steady following in Galway and further afield in the past year, will be returning to the city’s Townhouse Bar on December 13 for a very special Christmas get-together.
Their shows are full-bodied musical experiences with all members sharing a love of theatrics and creating music that is as emotive as it is interesting. Singing in three-part harmony, they play an extensive variety of instruments, including piano, double bass, electric base, acoustic guitar, flute, banjo, clarinet, tin whistle, melodica, ukulele, drums, harmonium, glockenspiel, bodhrán, jew’s harp and tuba.
Back in July, My Fellow Sponges released their debut album, Bonne Nuit, which was recorded in various locations, including Termonfeckin, pianist/singer Anna Mullarkey’s house in Galway and city based Hobjunker Studios, which is run by Jay Burke.
“Jay was very good, half the songs were done there,” says Donal, who sings and plays guitar and banjo in the band. “Generally we’re very happy with the album,” he says of the release, adding that “it’s still very new to us”.
Hard copies of Bonne Nuit are available in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop in Middle Street, from The Green Fox, Cross Street. The album can also be downloaded digitally on bandcamp.com.
• Doors for The Townhouse gig are 9pm and admission is €5.
