The cost of operating the city’s waste water treatment plant has fallen by €1.2 million per year.

Irish Water, which has taken over the operation of Mutton Island, says that the operational cost of the facility is now €100,000 cheaper every month under a new contract.

Irish Water, the public utility under fire for its handling of the introduction of water charges, confirmed the saving in its monthly bulletin to elected representatives, just released.

It also confirmed that the facility was being upgraded.

“Irish Water has taken on a number of substantial wastewater projects for implementation during 2014 which, when completed, will provide major environmental benefits through a combination of increased capacity and higher standards of effluent,” it said.

Irish Water said that one of the projects includes Mutton Island and the other is in Kildare.

“Mutton Island works serving Galway is being upgraded, while operating costs have been reduced by €100,000 per month under the contract,” the company revealed.

Labour Party City Councillor, Niall McNelis said he welcomes the savings from the operation of Mutton Island.

He said the money that is saved should be invested back into water services in Galway.

Meanwhile, Irish Water says its customer contact service is open 24-hours, and can be contacted on 1890 278 278
