The musical theatre show, Ladies in the Blues, which play Galway’s Town Hall Theatre next Friday, September 6, is celebration of women’s role in the history of the blues.

It tells that story from the music’s Gospel roots of the 1920s, through vaudeville and jazz, to the blues rock of the 1960s and 70s is coming to Galway from its success in Glastonbury.

This all-Irish cast of four diverse female singers and a cracking band of blues sidemen return to Galway and will bring the audience on a women’s journey through song with iconic visual backdrops of the great female trailblazers. These include Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Ma Rainey, Etta James, Sr Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith and Janice Joplin among others.

The show brings these pioneering women to life, with songs such as CC Ryder, Black Coffee Blues, I Put a Spell on You, Bring it on Home to Me, Ball and Chain, Piece of My Heart, Feelin’ Good, I’d Rather Go Blind, Ain’t Nobody’s Business and many more.

This show began its journey in 2015 as a pub gig and grew from there. It has since performed to sold-out audiences and received standing ovations in national theatres and jazz festivals across the country.

Two singles Jelly Roll and Misunderstood, have been released, as has the album Ladies in The Blues Live.

This year, Ladies in the Blues was performed on the acoustic stage at the world’s largest green-field festival, Glastonbury.
