CITY TRIBUNE
Musical journey with the Navarra Quartet
The UK’s Navarra String Quartet will visit St Joseph’s Church in Galway City next Thursday November 25, for a concert being presented by Music for Galway. It will begin at 8pm.
They will perform Bartók’s Quartet Number 3 and Dvorák’s Quartet Opus 106, preceded by Henriëtte Bosmans String Quartet. Less well-known than the two men on the programme, Bosmans was born in Amsterdam in 1895 and her early career as a pianist and composer coincided with the rise of Nazism. The German invaded Holland in 1940 and for much of World War II, Bosmans relied on underground house concerts to earn a living, while also trying to save her Jewish mother from deportation.
The Navarra Quartet, which was formed in 2002, is one of the UK’s most sought-after string quartets. The current members are Benjamin Marquise Gilmore on violin Laia Valentin Braun on violin, Sascha Bota on viola and Corkman Brian O’Kane on cello. From the beginning, the group was recognised as an exciting new arrival and, in 2006, the UK Young Classical Artists Trust, which supports emerging artists, gave it support. Since then, the Navarra Quartet has a host of prestigious awards, including top prizes at the Banff, Melbourne and Florence International String Quartet Competitions.
