THE Galway senior camogie team secured their fourth All-Ireland crown after a magnificent three-point victory over Cork at Croke Park on Sunday. In an extremely tight and tense finish to the All-Ireland Final, Galway showed terrificcomposure, resolve and character in the last ten minutes to deservedly claim the silverware on the day.
True grit was the order of the day at Croke Park, particularly when Cork appeared to be taking control at a crucial stage of the second half. However, the ladies from the west simply refused to be beaten, in a fantastic display of steely resolve and will to win. When it came to the crunch, the Tribeswomen answered the questions asked of them to get over the line impressively.
The composure, leadership, guile, and courage of the Galway players came to the fore as they outscored Cork by 1-4 to 0-1 in the critical minutes which followed Katrina Mackey’s goal. The likes of Sarah Dervan, Emma Helebert, Caitríona Cormican, Aoife Donohue, Niamh Kilkenny, Ailish O’Reilly and the McGrath sisters stood up as huge leaders when the need was at its greatest.
Galway’s achievement is all the more impressive for beating a Cork side of the highest quality. The Rebels contributed significantly to what was a fantastic contest, with the fluency and physicality of the game making for a great spectacle. The match ups made for compelling viewing throughout the game, with the quality of both sets of players providing a tremendous standard of play at Croke Park.
In overcoming Cork for only the second time in nine final meetings, Galway overcame the weight of history to defeat a county which has traditionally inflicted excessive heartbreak on the Tribeswomen. On this occasion, Sarah Dervan and her teammates simply weren’t prepared to go home without the county’s fourth All-Ireland title in the bag. For more, read this week’s Connacht Tribune.
