IN somewhat of an unexpected move, Galway WFC this week made a number of announcements regarding the expansion of their backroom team, with the appointment of Alan Murphy as Senior team manager the most eye catching.

Of course, Murphy is a well known figure in the local and national game, and is a former Galway United player and manager. He is also the club’s record goal scorer and just two weeks ago managed the Connacht Schools side to the Interprovincial title for the second time in three seasons.

Murphy will be stepping into the shoes of Stephen Lally who has been promoted to the role of Player and Coach Development Director. Lally is also a former Galway United player and manager, and he moved into the Galway WFC job in mid-season when Billy Clery stepped down.

The former Mervue United Youth Development Officer did an excellent job as they finished the season on a high with away wins over title contenders Wexford Youths and Peamount United, while they were beaten by Shelbourne in the Women’s FAI Cup semi-final.

According to a club source, one of the reasons for the change was a look into the future and the Women’s National League requirement that the manager must have an A coaching licence from the 2023 season.

Murphy is currently doing his Pro Licence and will have it completed in the spring. With his experience, he was the perfect fit for the job and his first task will be to get a squad together for next season.

While the majority of the Galway WFC squad are local, one of his big tasks will be trying to hold on to Irish international Savannah McCarthy, as a long queue has formed in order to try and get the signature of the Kerry native.
