Mumford & Sons for summer gig in Galway
Date Published: 04-Apr-2012
Award-winning British folk rockers Mumford & Sons are set to play an open-air gig in Salthill this summer for up to 15,000 fans.
Galway City Council is in talks with a concert promoter at the moment and has pencilled a provisional date of June 9.
Details are currently being finalised, before plans go on public display for submissions over a five week period to decide whether a licence will be granted.
It’s understood that Council officials are attempting to negotiate a fee in the region of €20,000, which would then be ring-fenced for local projects.
And it will also bring a cash bonanza for local businesses, coming just one week after the annual Five-a-Side weekend.
Councillor Mike Crowe, Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said that while the maximum capacity will be 15,000, he expects the numbers will be closer to 10,000.
“Galway City Council is in talks with an event promoter to try and bring this well-known international group to play a concert in early June. The date been considered is Saturday, June 9.
The band has been nominated for and has won a series of awards and is best known for its 2009 single ‘Little Lion Man’, which reached No. 1 in the US charts.
The support acts for the gig have not yet been confirmed, but tickets are likely to be on sale within the next fortnight, ‘subject to licence’.
“The promoters are currently finalising details with the executive in Galway City Council, and subject to those been agreed, the plans then would go on public display to get the views of the public and business community. They will be on display five weeks and then would be brought before full council for a decision,” said Cllr Crowe.
