Multi-talented Tom Portman to play Galway Folk Club

Multi-instrumentalist, performer, composer and songwriter Tom Portman will play the Galway Folk Club at de Burgo’s, on Augustine Street, this Friday, September 29, at 10pm.

Tom, whose instruments include the acoustic and electric guitar as well as dobro and other strings, has been a constant force in Irish music for the past decade.

The term eclectic barely describes him. Tom has released four solo albums in which he has explored the blues, Irish melodies, swing, ragtime, bluegrass and Indian ragas. The Journey (2007), At One (2011) and Float Your Blues Away (2013) showcase his talent with dobro and guitar, as well as his songwriting skills.

His 2015 release, White Crow, also saw him writing for violin, mandolin, banjo, piano, flute, vocals and double bass.

And he played dobro on the successful animated film, The Ugly Duckling and Me.

Tom regularly tours Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe, performing with the likes of Louisiana slide player, Dege Legg whose music featured in Tarantino’s film Django Unchained. And he has supported the likes of Eric Bibb and Preston Reed. He has also performed with award-winning Polish blues vocalist Magda Picroczyk and Canadian songwriter Doug Pailsey.
