Multi-talented Mundy for Festival show in Monroe’s

The ever-popular Mundy comes to Monroe’s Live this Saturday, July 16, as part of the Galway International Arts Festival.  The Birr native recently played for President Joe Biden, at an event in held in the US Vice President’s honour in Dublin Castle.

Biden’s fellow American Steve Earle has praised Mundy for his version of Galway Girl.

“Galway Girl is the one thing I’m sure to be remembered for,” Earle said. “I owe a lot of that to Mundy . . . the biggest hit was his version . . . they’re going to be singing that song in Ireland for a long time.”

Mundy released his debut album in 1996 on the Epic label – a subsidiary of Sony. The single To You I Bestow was used in Baz Luhrman’s smash-hit Romeo And Juliet. Despite that success, Mundy was dropped by Epic and it’s a testament to his determination that he stuck at it. He used the Romeo and Juliet royalties to fund his second album, and 24 Star Hotel gave him an Irish smash-hit in the form of July. Since then, he hasn’t looked back and is rarely off the road.  Working with Sharon Shannon yielded his aforementioned version of Galway Girl.

Last year Mundy released his latest self-titled debut, showing he still had the hunger and songwriting chops he showed back in the mid-1990s.

Expect a gutsy show with plenty of sing-alongs with Mundy and his band at Monroe’s. Doors 9pm, tickets €22.50/€20 online.
