Moycullen woman takes the chain
A Moycullen woman has made a little slice of local history by becoming the first female to serve as the Insurance Institute of Galway President for the second time.
Hazel Morrison from Moycullen previously held the chain for 2011/2012; John Forde from Knocknacarra was the only other of the Institute’s Presidents to have held the position on two occasions, 1979/1980 and 2007/2008.
“It is particularly pleasing to take on this role during the year that our Institute celebrates 45 years,” said Hazel, who works with Gleeson & Associates, Loss Assessors, in Lower Salthill Road, is married to Brian Pagett and has one son Glen.
Immediately following her inauguration, Hazel’s first role was to officiate at a graduation ceremony held in the Radisson Hotel where over 40 local insurance personnel achieved various industry qualifications.
In her address, Hazel stressed that self-management of career in today’s business environment is critical.
“Many people over-rely on the professional grapevine to advance, and although important, in this current age of increasing corporate governance and regulation, the attaining of educational standards and their maintenance is paramount.
“I have been fortunate to benefit from the advice and backing of key people throughout my career and this has led me to choose the theme of mentoring for my term in office. It is wonderful to see so many employers attend this evening’s graduation ceremony in acknowledgement and support of their employee’s achievements.
“A company is only as good as its employees – It is so important therefore that we initiate steps to push, help, recognise and highlight the educational progression of our colleagues,” she added.
Others elected to its local council on the evening were (Deputy President) Rhonda Cribben, (Vice President) Darragh Guinnane, (Hon. Secretary) Andrew Parkinson, (Treasurer) Padraic Benson, (Education/CPD Officer) Jean Boyd, (PRO Officer) Laura Browne, Della Keane, Jim Molloy, Mike Cubbard, Laura Enright, Michael Gough, Greta McGrath, Arlene O’Brien, Karen Tyrrell, Michael Skelton, Clare Grimes, Richard Geraghty, Sean Lynn and Eimear Ridge.
