Moycullen set the standard as senior title race kicks off

COUNTY champions Moycullen, having claimed a first-ever Frank Fox Cup last year, are now the team to catch as the Galway senior football championship makes its return this weekend.

Although all eyes will be on Moycullen, another big showdown is that of kingpins Corofin and one of the form teams of 2020, Barna. Recently crowned Division 1 champions and title hopefuls Mountbellew/Moylough will also be seeking to make a winning start to their campaign against St. Michael’s.

Another tie of note is that of contenders Tuam Stars and City side St. James’. Elsewhere, last year’s intermediate winners Cortoon Shamrock face a Killannin outfit that showed much promise when reaching the Division 1 league decider while Division 2 league champions Annaghdown face An Cheathrú Rua.

Due to Government Covid restrictions, crowds are limited to 500 at county grounds – namely Pearse Stadium, Tuam Stadium, Kenny Park and Duggan Park – and 200 at all other venues.

Salthill/Knocknacarra v Caherlistrane

(Tuam Stadium, 3pm)

A tricky fixture to commence their campaign with, but one Salthill/Knocknacarra should negotiate nonetheless. With players of the quality of the Finnertys, William and Rob, Cathal Sweeney, Eoin McFadden, John Maher, Evan Murphy, Eoin Tinney and Tomo Culhane, they should be able to dictate the pace.

Caherlistrane came racing out of the proverbial blocks last year by beating Tuam Stars in a local derby, but then came unstuck in their ensuing games. In the likes of Cein D’Arcy, Oisín O’Brien, Jonathan McGrath and Stephen Burke, they have players to make an impact – just, perhaps, not enough of them.

Verdict: Salthill/Knocknacarra.
