Moycullen do the business in shock win on home turf
ALL four of Galway’s national league sides were at home last weekend, and three of them made the own-court advantage count with crucial wins as the season nears the half-way stage.
Moycullen eased their relegation worries in the men’s Super League with a five-point win over Templeogue; but Maree look to be in a scrap to retain their top flight status following a second consecutive big defeat, this time at home to league leaders, Tralee Warriors.
Maree’s Women’s Super League side are back up to joint second in the table after a six-point win over Fr Mathew’s in a thriller in Oranmore; while in Women’s Division 1, NUIG Mystics moved back to the top of the Southern Conference as an emphatic final quarter saw them ease past Limerick Celtics.

Moycullen 75
Templeogue 70
Moycullen caused something of an upset in their final home game before Christmas last Saturday, securing an impressive win against Griffith College, Templeogue, writes Steven Heaney.
Strong first and fourth quarters helped John Cunningham’s side bounce back from the previous week’s defeat against Neptune to claim a win against a Dublin side that has still to win on the road this season.
Irish U-20 stars Paul Kelly and James Conaire played out of their skin for Moycullen early on, each netting seven points in the first quarter, pushing them out to a 5-point lead.
Templeogue, though missing their inside talisman Jason Killeen, couldn’t be denied for too long, however, and led by American player, Darren Townes, they managed to flip the scoreboard, opening up a 5-point lead of their own just before half-time.
The sides went score-for-score in the third quarter. Dylan Cunningham and Dan Vila provided some much-needed leadership for Moycullen as the home side just about managed to stay in touch with the visitors, who led 58-54.
The final quarter was a different story, however. Templeogue began to slow the tempo in an attempt to prevent Moycullen gathering the attacking edge, but their hosts found an emphatic answer to the tactic.
