When I lived in Australia, I was always getting complimented on my “lovely Irish skin”. And it’s true, Aussies have to battle hard to keep their skin beautiful. Women far younger than me bore much deeper wrinkles and quite severe photodamage.

The weather is so harsh, the light so intense, that even if fastidious about wearing sunscreen – which only really became a thing among the general populace in the noughties – it is hard to avoid the consequences.

Despite the continent adopting the sun protection advice to “slip, slop, slap” – slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat – Australia continues to have the highest incidence of skin cancer and premature skin ageing.

Australian made and owned, Ultraceuticals is a cosmeceutical and multi-active skincare range created by Dr Geoffrey Heber, who opened one of the first non-surgical cosmetic medical clinics in Australia in 1988.

His clients were demanding high performance skincare products that were more effective than those sold in department stores and pharmacies. He also recognised a need for products that could maintain the results garnered from the cosmetic treatments.

Dr Heber founded Doctors Formula in 1991, the first Australian distributor of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products, to cosmetic medical clinics, the beauty industry and pharmacies. From there he created Ultraceuticals, which has a large range of professional-grade products and in-clinic treatments to address major skin concerns such as premature skin ageing and pigmentation that are a result of photodamage.
