Move to provide bus route across Quincentenary Bridge

A move to set up a bus route from Knocknacarra, across the Quincentenary Bridge to Parkmore, to help resolve some of Galway City’s chronic traffic congestion, has passed its critical first step.

The Galway Transportation Strategic Policy Committee has approved a motion urging the establishment of such a corridor and it will now go before a full meeting of the City Council for deliberation.

The Quincentenary Bridge, which first opened to traffic in 1984, has never been used to provide a cross-city bus service. But now the Galway Transportation SPC has called for a ‘bus priority facility’ over the bridge.

Cllr Colette Connolly wants the issue to be dealt with once and for all, and to stop “fiddling around” with the problem.

“It’s absolutely gobbledygook nonsense to be saying we’re going to be making alterations at Parkmore, we’re going to change the roundabouts to single light junctions, that’s all very well, but you’re only fiddling around with the problem. It’s not a solution. You have to have a regular bus service from the west side over to the east side,” she said.

Cllr Connolly said that if a regular bus service that crossed the city every 15 minutes was to be introduced, it would be far more appealing to workers and this would be imperative to the success of this new public transport system.
