Mountbellew-Moylough men just go through the motions
Mountbellew-Moylough 2-18
An Cheathrú Rua 1-5
Patrick Flaherty at Pearse Stadium
EFFICIENT, effective, effortless: three of the many superlatives that described the impressive performance of Mountbellew-Moylough as they booked their place in the Quarter finals of the senior football championship with a 16-point victory to take second place in Group 3.
The men in black and amber made light work of their Gaeltacht opposition with nothing on the line, ten different players getting on the scoresheet in a performance that shows their credentials as Corofin’s main rivals for the Frank Fox Cup.
It was all over as a contest before referee Gerald Lohan had even blown for half time, two purple patches where last year’s county finalists hit 1-4 without reply, creating a 12-point cushion that led to a second half that was little more than a glorified challenge match.
From the off, Michael Donnellan’s troops were machine like in their approach, patiently going through the phases and always seeming to pick out the man in the best position to score as they effectively camped out in the An Cheathrú Rua half.
The opening two scores were proof of these tactics as Leo Donnellan and Andy Barrett finished off moves that involved at least five players, while a Matthew Barrett turnover from a kick-out ended with an easy score for James Foley, showing they could speed up the play when necessary.
Michael Daly pointed on 12 minutes to widen the gap to four and seconds later came the first of their goals, Mike Kelly rising highest to turnover the resulting kick-out before duly soling goalward and kicking it across goal for a diving Andy Barrett to fist home.
