MOUNTBELLEW/Moylough claimed the Bon Secours Division One football league title after a comprehensive win over Killanin in Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

That old adage that goals win games was never more evident than in this encounter. Two goals from Patrick Kelly and another from Barry McHugh sealed the win for Val Daly’s charges.

On a gorgeous day for football, Mountbellew/Moylough opened the scoring when Paul Donnellan kicked over a close-range effort following some neat play between McHugh and James Foley, who had come into the starting line-up in place of Michael Daly.

Killanin replied with a free from Enda Kelly followed by a point from Johnny Heaney after some precise passing between Kelly and Aaron McGuire.

The sides were very closely matched for the opening 15 minutes. As the struggle for midfield supremacy continued, both sides traded scores. Then a quick free kick from Heaney allowed Joseph O’Flaherty to score with ease. A McHugh free was quickly followed up by a wonderful point from play by Kelly as Killanin levelled the scores.

The game sparked into life on the quarter hour, when Killanin struck a goal out of nothing. A goal kick went awry, ending up in the hands of Patrick Kelly, and his shot went into the bottom left-hand corner of Oisín Finn’s net, despite the keeper getting a hand to it. Minutes later Finn redeemed his error by saving well from McHugh, although Paul Donnellan did manage to put the rebound over the bar to extend their lead to four points.

Barry McHugh added another point, getting on the end of some neat play by John Daly and Cian Foley before some quality fielding by Enda Kelly sent McGuire through on goal for Killanin, but he blasted his shot over the bar.
