GALWAY football champions Mountbellew-Moylough should know by now to always expect the unexpected as they experienced the closest of shaves against the Leitrim kingpins Ballinamore who certainly went down fighting on Sunday.

Over the past couple of years, the North Galway side have managed to turn the tables on Corofin, but they were guility of taking a limited Ballinamore side for granted in this intriguing Connacht club quarter-final in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Trailing by six points at half time, having conceded two simple goals that came about as a result of defensive blunders, Mountbellew-Moylough produced a compelling second half display that their supporters have become more accustomed to.

In the early stages of the second half, they scored seven points without reply but yet had to rely on a marvellous John Daly interception at the death to avoid being unceremoniously dumped out of the competition.

While Mountbellew-Moylough’s second half dominance eventually resulted in them overturning a substantial deficit into a four point lead, they were still not out of the woods by any means.

The Leitrim champions, who had been completely overwhelmed by their Galway counterparts in the latter stages, got an unexpected reprieve when freetaker Wayne McKeon hit the target twice in stoppage time before Ballinamore embarked on one last gasp effort to cause the shock of the year.

Their corner forward Tom Prior was well positioned to have a crack at goal and only for a vital intervention by Daly in front of the posts, it would have been curtains for Mountbellew-Moylough.
