Motorist’s narrow escape after car bursts into flames
A 33-year-old man living in Galway barely escaped with his life when his car burst into flames on the Dublin Road.
John Mulry, who lives in Galway City, was driving his Peugeot 307 on Monday evening to collect his dog from his mother’s house when his car conked at the traffic lights near Galway Irish Crystal.
Just after getting the convertible going again, it spluttered along, as the traffic behind began beeping impatiently.
He noticed smoke in front of his windscreen, followed by flames emerging from the bonnet.
He quickly realised he was in imminent danger: “I just grabbed my phone and my wallet and jumped out of the front seat of my car and since it was a convertible it was easy to hop out, luckily.”
Approximately 20 seconds later, John watched on as his vehicle – which passed the NCT two weeks ago – exploded into flames.
