MOTION ON CONCERNS OVER PROPOSED GALWAY BAY FISH FARM

A county councillor has raised serious concerns over plans for a fish farm on Galway Bay.

Cllr Jim Cuddy raised a motion at this week’s meeting of the local authority highlighting his reservations on the proposed development, which was seconded by Cllr Thomás O’Curraoin.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara has submitted an application for an aquaculture licence for the cultivation of finfish about a mile off the coast of the Aran Island of Inis Oirr.

It claims the facility could generate over 100 million euro worth of exports per anum and create hundreds of jobs.

However Cllr Cuddy says serious concerns have been brought to him by the angling sector including the impact on wild salmon stocks.

Meanwhile, 13 Galway based seafood companies have signalled their support for the proposed fish farm.

They are part of a group of 43 nationwide who have issued letters of support for the BIM plan.
