Galway bay Fm newsroom
The mother of the little Nigerian boy, Solomon Soremekun, who died following an incident in a lift at Hynes’ Buildings, Galway earlier this week is understood to have been too distraught to attend his funeral today.
The father of the three-year-old boy was among the large number of mourners at the prayer service in the mortuary at Galway’s University Hospital this afternoon and afterwards when he was laid to rest in Bohermore Cemetery.
At the request of the mother each person attending carried a lighted candle, both at the service in the mortuary and at the graveside. Afterwards the lighted candles were placed on the grave.
Mayor of Galway City Cllr Pardaic Conneely, who has met the parents a number of times in recent days was asked to speak at the graveside as was a representative of the Nigerian embassy in Dublin.
Investigations into the incident during which the little boy was trapped in the lift shaft last Monday afternoon are continuing.
