JANUARY is not yet upon us but Galway’s possible gig of the year for 2009 has been announced.

Morrissey, the former front man with The Smiths, plays Leisureland on Monday, April 29. Morrissey rose to prominence in the 1980s with The Smiths. Backed by Johnny Marr’s distinctive guitar sound, he penned singles like Panic, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and How Soon Is Now.

After the band broke up in 1987, hebegan a successful solo career. His recent solo work has been hugely impressive, in particular the singles You Have Killed Me and Irish Blood, English Heart. He will release his new album, Years Of Refusal, in February.

Morrissey has been a vegetarian since he was 11 and no meat is allowed to be sold at his shows. He is also an outspoken critic of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. Above all, Morrissey remains a great performer.

Tickets for the show are €54.80, from Ticketmaster.
