It’s estimated that more than two thousand people in Galway have some form of dementia.

The HSE West provided the figures at a meeting of the Health Forum West this week.

The figure of 2 thousand 200 for Galway is based on the application of Euroderm prevalence rates to population based on the 2006 census.

It’s estimated that 962 men and 1300 women have dementia according to the 2006 statistics.

The HSE West says its main objective is to maintain people in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.
