Months to replace unsafe bridge in Connemara

A senior engineer at Galway County Council says it could take months to replace an unsafe bridge in Connemara.

Liam Gavin says the bridge at Seanapheasteen, between Rosaveal and Oughterard, is in a special area of conservation and the planning application needs to go through An Bord Pleanala.

The local authority put a weight restriction of 1.5 tonnes on the bridge because the concrete is in poor condition.

However, this means that it can’t take heavier vehicles such as ambulance and fire trucks.

One mother living in the community is also unable to use the bridge for her specially modified car for her daughter.

Galway Senator Fidelma Healy Eames will raise the motion in the Seanad this week and says the works should be carried out urgently.
