Monaghan leads the way in Galway’s easy victory
Galway 4-12
Sligo 0-8
GALWAY’S minor football manager Alan Glynn praised his team’s intelligence after they secured their second win in this year’s Connacht championship following a 16-point victory over Sligo at Markievicz Park last Friday.
First half goals from Jack Lonergan and Stephen Curley coupled with late green flags for Eanna Monaghan and Olan Kelly provided a healthy scoring difference ahead of next week’s massive encounter with joint leaders Mayo (May 6).
The Tribesmen were impressive in stages, especially when putting the shoulder to the wheel and running at their opponents. But they were also guilty of lapses in concentration that if not punished by the green and red, they will be should they reach the All-Ireland series.
“They’re (Sligo) the reigning Connacht minor champions and they just recently won the under 20 so there’s a big buzz in Sligo underage football, and rightfully so,” said the Galway manager afterwards
“And I thought we dealt with that really well and we dealt with what Sligo had to throw at us,” said St Michael’s clubman Glynn.
Galway were unchanged from their 13-point win over Roscommon the previous week and in a cagey opening from both teams, they preceded to try and unlock their defensive hosts.
Monaghan landed a free on six minutes, but immediately Ryan Gillespie strode up the other end and equalised for Sligo. Colm Costello’s placed kick from out on the left put Galway back ahead before Ronan Niland restored parity making it 0-2 apiece on 13 minutes.
