Molloy set to make his professional boxing debut in Glasgow this weekend
Around 160 supporters of Kieran Molloy will travel to the Hydro Arena in Glasgow tomorrow (Saturday) night to watch the Galway fighter make his professional debut against the Spaniard Damien Esquisabel.
A large gang from his hometown of Oughterard and surrounding areas are travelling to Scotland for the fight, including many from Oughterard Boxing Club where Molloy began boxing at the age of five with brothers Stephen and Colm.
The 23-years-old turned professional in December, and his debut is on the undercard of the World title fight between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall. Eric Donovan, Paddy Donovan, and Kurt Walker also appear on the bill.
His cousin Marissa Molloy-Folan said excitement has been building all week.
“We’ve a huge crowd going from Oughterard and Killanin, Limerick, Dublin, Donegal, Mayo and England. I’m going over with a Galway flag and will be shouting my head off! There’s huge excitement, everyone is looking forward to it,” she said.
Molloy signed a multi-year deal with one of the best-known promoters in the sport, Top Rank, in December. Managed by Michael and Jamie Conlon, he is coached by Angel Fernandez and has trained with former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, as well as Frazer Clarke and Richard Riakporhe.
In a recent interview with Irish-Boxing.com, Molloy said he has managed the transition to the professional ranks.
