Modern Movement provides perfect stage for newer acts
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
As events continue to return, it is encouraging to see original music nights reintroduce themselves to venues that have lay dormant around Galway for much of the last year and a half. One such night is A Modern Movement which, despite having debuted in Seven’s the Loft in November 2019, is still in its early days.
The project was pieced together by one of the city’s most notorious broadcasters, DJs, and facilitators of local music – John O’Connor. A Modern Movement celebrates its reawakening in the Loft this Saturday, November 13, with a punk/indie bill that features Bannered Mare, Nerves, Ash Red and New Ceremony. Despite the frustrations of pandemic restrictions, John was grateful to collaborate with the Galway Summer Garden in staging an outdoor gig last September.
“We had a bit of luck during the pandemic that I knew the people running Galway Summer Garden in the old golf course in Salthill,” he explains.
“I rang them and I said, ‘I’ve been doing this project and we have three acts – would you be up for putting us on for a night?’ They gracefully gave us a night towards the end of their run, and we put on Jack Lee, Derek Ellard as the headliner and Dónal from Ursidae. So, we kind of had something happen during the pandemic which was a nice little break.
“With everything starting up again this year, we were taking our time about it. We wanted to make sure we were able to do it right and within whatever restrictions were being put on everything. We had to cancel about three gigs overall and we had some bands at the time who were up-and-comers but have now up-and-come.”
The Summer Garden gig undoubtedly embraced a folk style with the three singer-songwriters on the night playing solo acoustic sets, but A Modern Movement’s latest bill has a much heavier feel to it.
The four acts John has chosen may vary in terms of sound but the energy in the Loft on Saturday will remain consistent throughout the gig.
