NUIG Maree and Moycullen both completed their regular season schedule at the weekend with two games apiece at home, and both recorded a win and a loss.

NUIG Maree suffered a 13-point defeat against South Conference winners Ballincollig on Saturday, before running riot against a DCU Saints side that finished bottom of the North Conference, hitting 15 3-pointers on their way to a 49-point win.

Nothing would drop for the home side on Saturday night as they slipped to a 80-67 defeat to a Ballincollig side that lost just one league game all season in their first season in the top flight, having won the Division 1 title last season.

There was little between the sides in the first quarter, which the visitors edged 17-15, before they moved up through the gears in the second quarter, outscoring their hosts 27-15 to take a 44-30 lead at half-time.

The third quarter was another close affair, but despite a six-point run midway through the quarter, NUIG Maree just couldn’t get close to their visitors, who edged the final quarter to claim the win.

NUIG Maree were hoping for a pair of wins over the weekend to potentially see them climb to third in the table and a meeting with Killester in the play-offs after what was a turbulent weekend for the game’s authorities.

Belfast Star were second in the North Conference table ahead of the final weekend of games, only to discover that they had been playing an incorrectly registered player all season. Once they spotted the mistake, they withdrew from the league, meaning Killester moved up to second.

The news came on the same weekend that Limerick Sport Huskies also had all their league results wiped over another player registration issue, with question to be answered over how neither the respective clubs, or more pertinently the authorities, noticed the error in the past six months.
