Mixed luck for Maree club in latest round of league fare

Patrick Lyons hit 16 points for Moycullen in his side's big win over DCU Saints in Dublin on Saturday.

MOYCULLEN made it back-to-back wins over the Christmas period in the Men’s Super League when recording an impressive win over DCU Saints in Dublin at the weekend to climb further from the foot of the table, leapfrogging over Killester in the process.

There was mixed news for Maree’s two Super League sides, with the men’s play-off hopes suffering a blow following a five-point defeat at home to Killorglin; but the women’s side remain second in the table after an at-time nervous home win over Brunell.

Meanwhile, NUIG Mystics had an unexpected weekend off after their scheduled opponents on Saturday, Fab Plus North West, withdrew from the league last week.

MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE

DCU Saints 78

Moycullen 91

Moycullen made it two victories from two games over the festive period when overcoming DCU Saints in Dublin on Saturday, writes Steven Heaney.

The Galway club now move into a tie with Killester for the second-from-bottom position in the league, one point behind Maree and Saints, though both of those sides have the better head-to-head record against Moycullen, which means they would stay above Moycullen in the table in the event of being on equal points.

Moycullen struck first in Dublin. Paul Kelly and Paddy Lyons were aggressive off the dribble early, using their quickness to their advantage.

DCU’s big-man pairing of Super League veterans Martins Provizors and Michael Bonaparte provided most of their early baskets, but Moycullen always held the upper hand and led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter.

The home side got their noses ahead in the second-quarter as Moycullen struggled against that big pairing, who continued to rack up the points in offence, and also disrupt Moycullen at the other end.
