Missing for 40 years

FOUR decades after its disappearance, a valuable wrought silver cup was back in the spotlight last week when it was re-presented to the Galway Regatta Committee.
The cup – now almost 130 years old – is part of the magnificent collection of silver that has been part of the Galway Regatta since those days of the early 1880’s.
A numberof well known personalities with direct links to its history were in attendance the presentation in the Galway City Museum, including the son and grandson of the 1912 winner Eugene Hickey of Hibernian Boat Club – and later Galway Rowing Club – John and David Hickey.
John Hickey was a prominent oarsman with Galway Rowing Club in the 1940’s and his presence at the presentation was a very fitting memorial to a great rower and man of the Corrib.
Present also was formerGovernment Minister Bobby Molloy, the last recorded Galway rower to win this cup in 1956.
Coincidentally, there is a connection with Robert Molloy and the 1887 winner, C. Moon (of Moon’s department store), in that Mr. Molloy currently resides in the house once owned by the Moon family.
Bobby remembers the event at which he recorded this victory and has provided a picture of his crew from 1956 in which the cup sits with the other silverware won that year. This cup was also won in ……….
