Missed chances haunt West Utd

WEST Utd have waited for a long time since their last appearance in a Connacht Junior Cup semi final and while they eventually went on to claim that title in 1982, they will not have such happy memories of their most recent Cup encounter on Sunday.

For the majority of this last four contest with Athenry, they ran the show, created the chances and couldn’t have done any more in order to achieve victory — bar some dreadful finishing.

It all finished in heartache for the Claddagh based side as some poor marksmanship in the penalty shoot out was to cost them the chance of victory after a bruising encounter finished level at 2-2 following extra-time.

However to the credit of Athenry, they showed why they were treble champions last season as they stuck to the task in hand and eventually ground out a victory. Athenry also mantained their grip on the Premier League as they moved six points clear at the top following a 3-1 win overMervue Utd.
