AGRICULTURE Minister, Michael Creed, has said that he wants to hear from more farmers in the ongoing public consultation process on the issue of climate change and agriculture.

The consultation process on the National Climate and Air Roadmap for the Agriculture Sector to 2030 (Ag-Climatise) and Beyond – that began last month – will close on Friday, January 10 next.

According to Minister Creed, since the process began, his Department had received numerous worthwhile responses but he added that he wanted ‘to hear more from farmers’.

“Nobody is more familiar with the climate challenges our industry faces than the farmers of this country.

“I encourage more of them to get involved in this consultation process which will shape Irish agriculture over the next decade.

“We need to hear their views. It is critical that we face this challenge together and chart a credible roadmap for the industry,” said Minister Creed.

Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell, said that Irish farmers had embraced fully the concept of continuing to play a lead role in ensuring that Irish agriculture preserved its clean and green image.

“It is worth bearing in mind that over recent years, there has been only a very marginal increase of 1% in emissions from Irish agriculture while the corresponding increase for transport has been 137%.
